Android Directory Files

Some Android OS users has already known the device files management in their handheld. But, for the others, who don’t concern more or just be a rookie users still haven’t known the files management system.

Android provides several options for you to save persistent application data. The solution you choose depends on your specific needs, such as whether the data should be private to your application or accessible to other applications (and the user) and how much space your data requires.

Your data storage options are the following:

Shared Preferences
Store private primitive data in key-value pairs.
Internal Storage
Store private data on the device memory.
External Storage
Store public data on the shared external storage.
SQLite Databases
Store structured data in a private database.
Network Connection
Store data on the web with your own network server. (source)

I am gonna share my exploration in my device. Take notes that my smartphone is using OS Android 4.2.2 (JellyBean) and modified by Lenovo Launcher

File Browser UI

File Browser UI

On my Lenovo UI, I open the File Browser application. There will be 3 tabs shown: Internal Storage, External Storage, and Category. Internal Storage is my phone memory planted in my device. External Storage is my external memory from microSD. In Category, we can see the categorized files in my device, such as recent files, apps, pics, docs, etc.

Let’s go on to the Internal Storage. You can find folders like Download, DCIM, Audio, Bluetooth, and so on. There are lots of application data and system files stored here so be careful if you want to delete any folders in this directory.

In computing, external storage comprises devices that temporarily store information for transporting from computer to computer. Such devices are not permanently fixed inside a computer. The memory size of external storage is determined by the SD Card you plugged inside. Mostly, people store their personal data (pics, songs, vids) in this directory in order to share easily to another devices and not to interrupt the system files.

 FILE COMPRESSION

Android devices don’t always allow you to open every file type you might be emailed or download. The same goes for compressing a file or group of files, either writing or reading. Depending on what the file is, this might be a big inconvenience. In my Lenovo device, it can only read zip files but can’t write zip archive since I haven’t installed any application that makes zip or 7z files. Most of all Android phones need an extension application to write or read compressed files.

SYSTEM UTILITY

Actually there are so many utilities you can find in my device, but I only show some of them which are important.

1. Cleanup

Screenshot_2014-09-24-05-57-54

This utility is able to analyze your data storage and clean trashes or junk files to save internal memory. It is very useful because sometimes, internal memory is filled by cache or unwanted files.

2. Lenovo Security™

Screenshot_2014-09-24-06-16-40

This feature is only given by the developer in the latest model of Lenovo phones. There are anti-virus, privacy guard, data usage, anti-spam, anti-theft, and etc. It is like a multifunctional utility for self security. Thus, I don’t need downloadable anti-virus anymore.

3. SHAREit®

Screenshot_2014-09-24-06-23-15

People usually transfer files using Bluetooth feature. Lenovo thinks that it is an old-school method. They developed a new way to transfer files faster by utilizing the phone’s capability of hotspot tethering. This is a very valuable utility for Apple™ users because they don’t have any transfer tool. Here are what they offer us:

  • Share everything with other devices – pictures, videos, music files, documents, contacts… even apps(Android only)!
  • Devices with SHAREit can automatically find each other when in range.
  • Transfer HUGE files and videos in seconds… up to 60x faster than Bluetooth®.
  • Share without the need for Bluetooth, phone network or active Wi-Fi network… you don’t pay a cent for network charges. Devices wirelessly connect directly.
  • Even the app itself can be shared to other devices wirelessly, and rapid sharing can begin immediately.
  • Supports group sharing – up to 5 devices simultaneously. Instantly share a party video, music album or photo library to up to five friends at once

I think that’s all for now. Thanks for your visit 🙂

Hardware Customization

After getting a lesson about hardware customization last week, I intended to make some changes in my computer hardware. I will share to you what I did to my laptop. First of all, here I show you my computer’s specification…

Hardware Spec

Hardware Spec

As you can see there that my computer is just an ordinary one with nothing special in it. There is no graphic card because I don’t really like playing games. But, I need to inform you that the OS I am using is Windows 8 so please adapt if your computer is using another OS version. Check this out!

1. Keyboard settings

Commands: Settings > Control panel > Keyboard

After the keyboard properties tab opens, I changed the “repeat delay” setting to its shortest level. This means if I type letters on keyboard, the delay will be as fast as an eye blink. A young and energetic person like me love something fast and speedy especially in typing educational reports, journals, or blogs. Here are the before-after pictures:

2. Mouse settings

Commands: Settings > Control panel > Mouse

Sometimes, I had a problem with location of my pointer. It is hidden somewhere in the edge of the window. Sick of this thing, I customized the mouse pointer options. I gave a check the “show location of pointer when I press the CTRL key” box. This will help you to locate your pointer because a circle will appear at your window to locate your pointer position.

Instead of using touch pad, I also use a Logitech wireless mouse. When you buy a package of Logitech Wireless Mouse, you don’t get any driver installer. But in fact, you need to customize your mouse settings. There is a downloadable software named Logitech SetPoint™. In addition, I’m gonna explain this feature…

You can download the software here: http://www.logitech.com/en-au/mice-pointers/articles/11650

a. Button Settings

First window

First window

In this tab you can edit your mouse button task. They are left click, right click, and middle button. There is also a swap button command to swap the behavior between left and right button (useful for a left-handed one).

b. Pointer and Scrolling Settings

Second window

Second window

In this tab, you may change the pointer options such as pointer speed, acceleration, trails, and scrolling size. Actually you can find these settings in the control panel menu if you don’t use any extended mouse.

c. Game Settings

Third window

Third window

This is the most interesting part to explore for a game-addict 😀 lol.. If you enable the game detection, you are able to control the game mode settings. Since I’m not a gamer, I didn’t really mind with this part.

d. Mouse Batteries

Fourth window

Fourth window

To me this is the most useful information. This software can tell us our mouse’s battery level and warn us if the battery is getting low. Although it is not precisely accurate, this will help to monitor the mouse condition.

e. Unifying Software

Fifth window

Fifth window

The unifying software synchronizes your mouse wireless receiver. If you have another Logitech external hardware, you don’t need to plug in some receivers onto your computer. Simply plug one receiver and you can connect all Logitech hardware. Before that you should configure the settings in this unifying software.

I think that’s all of my post today. Hope it’s useful for you dear readers. Thanks and GBU…

First meeting of Computer Application Practicum (KOM201)

Hello people!! First of all, I’d like to say hi to all of my friends in Bogor Agricultural University (or we simply call it IPB). Well actually this is my very first post in a web log cause I never interested in writing before, especially in a virtual world lol . Now, I’m gonna tell you the story of my first Computer Application Practicum…

I and my classmates from the FST Department took a class at Cyber Singkong LSI last week. What is FST??? Later on I will explain it to you 🙂 We were listening to the assistants very passionately. They introduced to us what blog is because some of us were not seem familiar with it before. Not in a formal way, sometimes they gave us a joke too. This made me think that the assistants are easygoing, cool, and broad-minded (#nomention XD). On the last minutes of the class, I tried to open my blog. You know what happened next? “WordPress error” (WTH?!) This startled me for a second. I got a bad feeling about this. But, I didn’t mind it.

The next day, I tried to log in again. But, still nothing changed. I can not enter my Dashboard! FYI, my first task of this course is to post something and do customization on my student blog. I won’t get mark if I can’t access my blog. Luckily, I had the LINE ID of my assistant so I contacted him. He then told me to create new address at wordpress.com. He also promised me to teach how to make a badge. VOILA!!! Problem solved. Thanks to God and Mr. Timotius Devin.

Now I have posted my first ‘virgin’ post to this blog. I can’t wait to share any other information and my experiences. Hope you enjoy my story. See you at the next post! 🙂
